Featured: Big Chop! Newbie Natural Sista

day after big chop
Hey Every meet Renee Ffrench. A new natural sista who did the big chop and began her natural journey.

1) How long have you been natural and what make you do so? Also, how do family and friends react to your hair?
I have been natural for five months now; I decided to go natural because I wanted to change up my sense of style. At first when I had cut off my hair it was a shocker but most of my friends and family members say that I’m rocking the short hair perfectly.

2) What do you like about being natural?

I have less breakage when I bleach my hair often, it stays intact as oppose to when my hair was relaxed

3) How would you describe your hair? (Loose/tight curls, waves, 3b-3c 4a-4b, if you know, etc...)
2 months

My hair texture is 4A .

4) What products do you use to maintain your hair? (Please be specific, thank you!)

Most times I don’t use anything in my hair but when I do I rub the clear gel in, I use tropic isle living black castor oil shampoo to wash my hair on a weekly basis or at least every two weeks, I also use their hair food or their strong roots red pimento oil to moisturize and or oil my scalp.

5) What is your hair care routine? do you co-wash? (Conditioner only) how often do you co-wash? Do you blow dry or air dry? etc...

I try to comb out my hair every week but because my natural curls as so tight it doesn’t really make a difference but I do anyways to get rid off all my dead hair. But what I do almost every morning is wet my hair or rub a little gel to keep my curls neat and fuzzy free. I don’t co-wash my hair but when I do wash it I strictly air dry.

6) What are your favorite styling products?

My favorite product is the tropic isle living strong roots red pimento oil. Why?  It helps to thicken my hair especially how I bleach my hair roots regularly.

7) What is your best kept hair secret?

4 months
I really don’t have any

8) (Please finish the sentence) My natural hair is beautiful because ....?

…I’m a true natural Sista!

9) Is there anything else you would like to add?

Feature Friday!

We haven't done a Feature Friday post in fo eva!so without further ado, we present Monique! a newly natural who was tired of breakage and damage. Here's her story:

1) How long have you been natural and what make you do so? Also, How do family and friends react to your hair?
- I have been natural now for about 7-8 months.
2) What do you like about being natural?
- It gives me a sense of freedom and appreciation for the history behind my hair texture.
- Also, it's fun to do creative things with my natural hair that express my feelings (without worrying about chemical damage).
3) How would you describe your hair? (loose/tight curls, waves, 3b-3c 4a-4b, if you know,etc...)
- My hair has tight curls in the front and loose curls in the back. The top, front part of my head is straight but more curls are starting to appear.
4) What products do you use to maintain your hair?
- Currently I am Using:
--Burt's Bees Very Volumizing Shampoo With Pomegranate

--Burt's Bees Very Volumizing Conditioner With Pomegranate

--Africa's Best Ultimate Herbal Oil
--Sometimes I use Black Castor Oil And Shea Butter
5) What is your hair care routine? do you co-wash? (conditioner only) how often do you co-wash? do you blow dry or air dry? etc...
- I don't use heat on my hair. I like to co-wash, but not often. I also like to limit the amount of shampoo I use in my hair because it makes it dry.
- I try to co-wash once a week but I'm not sure how often I should wash. (Any Suggestions?)
6) What are your favourite styling products?
-Africa's Best Ultimate Herbal Oil
7) What is your best kept hair secret?
-I don't really have one.
8)  My natural hair is beautiful because....?
-it's a part of me.
9) Is there anything else you would like to add?
-Thank you so much for choosing me. I look forward to learning from you. :-)

We suggest that you take a look at your shampoo to see if it is too harsh for your hair, try  sulphate-free or moisturizing shampoos like KeraCare Natural Textures Cleansing Creme or  Jane Carter Hydrating shampoo check out these reviews here and here.
You should try pre-pooing as well. JoJo's go too product for dry hair is KimmayTube's Leave-In Condish! FABULOUS! Co-wash when you feel your hair needs a little moisture or needs a little cleaning and you dont want to use shampoo too often.
Find what works for you, keep a hair diary, track how your hair responds when ever you wash your hair, and what you use to wash it with. Your hair will tell you exactly what it needs!

My Big Chop

About a week ago I BC'ed. It was like 1 am and I was reading curly nikki when I looked over and saw my sister chopping off her hair. I had promised that I was gonna cut it on my bday but when it came I didn't get the gel I was hoping for. My sister who said she would be a long term transitioner started complaining that her hair was breaking too much. I suggested that she cut it with me but I didn't think that she was serious!

 My hair after I BC'ed

So a day after by bday I finally got some gel and I was reading up on women who recently BC'ed and I kind got cold feet. So when I saw that my sister cut off her hair, I said hey. Why not? so I BC'ed with my sister at 1 am July 15, 2010 WOOOOT! LOL

shampooed with conditioner (still in shock!)

The morning after

My hair this morning with gel

I am still cutting off relaxed ends but it is difficult because my hair is sooo straight when its dry so I don't know if I'm cutting relaxed or natural hair!. I have to wet it before I do any cutting. I have to admit that I was really scared about what people might think but I got lots of compliments, even my mom who never liked the idea of me going natural said it has grown on her !

My hair is about three inches natural now, so I'm thinking about braiding it soon so I'm not always playing/tugging and piling on products in my hair. I'm thinking of doing protective styling until I get the braids in and I try to post on them. If your planing on BCing don't be scared as long as you have the confidence you can pull off any look!
