Natural hair in Jamaica: Rastafarian Miss Jamaica 2007

Zahra Redwood, Miss Jamaica, performs during preliminary judging of the Miss Universe pageant in Mexico City on May 23. She is the contest's first Rastafarian and the first to appear in Dreadlocks. Redwood, 25, says she wants judges to see her as a "Rastafarian promoting the message of peace, love and unity throughout mankind." -- source msnbc.com

Although dreadlocks and Rastafarianism continues to be shrouded in controversy in Jamaica and throughout much of the world, for the first time in history, crowned its first dreadlocked Rasta "Miss Jamaica."

Miss Redwood serves as an inspiration to young and not so young Black females throughout the Diaspora who through no fault of their own believe that dark-skin, African features, natural Black hair, etc, etc are not beauty ideals.

Although Miss Redwood failed to place in the top 15 during the 2007 pageant, she serves as a trailblazer for those of use who can only hope to be so beautiful and daring.
