Hello There

Hey, so I recently took out my braids because my hair at the scalp was becoming "hard" I guess with dirt and they were looking like a hot mess! so I  cut them out on the weekend.

yeah....

I got hair ALL OVER my apartment! forced me to actually clean it -_-

 Hey dere!

Look closely, you can see the dirt and product all caked up .

The products I used.

Okay so I washed with Anwaar Co. Black Soap Herbal Shampoo, I had to wash THREE times to fully cleanse my hair!

This stuff is pretty good, It didn't strip my hair even though I washed it three times, it never got/felt dry and stripped.

Shed hairs that came out while washing.

After that I applied my Vatika Oil and Anwaar Co. Black Seed Hair Conditioner, and I detangled with the Tangle Teezer.......I thought that I would be wowed by the Teezer, but I wasn't. It was difficult for me to use it and to detangle my hair properly, I got the hang of it soon after but my hair was not cooperating , I guess that the oil was thick and I did not use much conditioner because I applied more condish to some areas and it was easier for the Tangle Teezer to comb through, so maybe that was the problem.

My mix of Vatika Oil and Black Seed Hair Condish

The hair that came out after using the Tangle Teezer.

I had to used saran rap because I did not have and plastic bags or caps.

I had to use Suave professionals Shea Butter Conditioner to wash out the Vatika Oil becuase the Anwaar wash finishing way too fast!

Freshly washed hair, I still had to detangle my hair again after using the Tangle Teezer twice.
 Length check!

WOOOT!

 More shed hair!

I did my usual twists with Eco Styler Argan Oil Gel, and my Shea Butter Mix

Even MORE shed hair, using the Tangle Teezer again, this time it was a lot better.

The Anwaar Co. shampoo and conditioner are great products, I have to use the Teezer again to really have an opinion on it. The Suave is a good condish for Co-Washing and I didn't really like the Vatika Oil..... I will be revisiting the oil when I wash my hair again. My hair is not dry or crunchy from the gel and It has sheen to it, though you can't see it from the pictures.

Later peeps.

Feature Friday!

We haven't done a Feature Friday post in fo eva!so without further ado, we present Monique! a newly natural who was tired of breakage and damage. Here's her story:

1) How long have you been natural and what make you do so? Also, How do family and friends react to your hair?
- I have been natural now for about 7-8 months.
2) What do you like about being natural?
- It gives me a sense of freedom and appreciation for the history behind my hair texture.
- Also, it's fun to do creative things with my natural hair that express my feelings (without worrying about chemical damage).
3) How would you describe your hair? (loose/tight curls, waves, 3b-3c 4a-4b, if you know,etc...)
- My hair has tight curls in the front and loose curls in the back. The top, front part of my head is straight but more curls are starting to appear.
4) What products do you use to maintain your hair?
- Currently I am Using:
--Burt's Bees Very Volumizing Shampoo With Pomegranate

--Burt's Bees Very Volumizing Conditioner With Pomegranate

--Africa's Best Ultimate Herbal Oil
--Sometimes I use Black Castor Oil And Shea Butter
5) What is your hair care routine? do you co-wash? (conditioner only) how often do you co-wash? do you blow dry or air dry? etc...
- I don't use heat on my hair. I like to co-wash, but not often. I also like to limit the amount of shampoo I use in my hair because it makes it dry.
- I try to co-wash once a week but I'm not sure how often I should wash. (Any Suggestions?)
6) What are your favourite styling products?
-Africa's Best Ultimate Herbal Oil
7) What is your best kept hair secret?
-I don't really have one.
8)  My natural hair is beautiful because....?
-it's a part of me.
9) Is there anything else you would like to add?
-Thank you so much for choosing me. I look forward to learning from you. :-)

We suggest that you take a look at your shampoo to see if it is too harsh for your hair, try  sulphate-free or moisturizing shampoos like KeraCare Natural Textures Cleansing Creme or  Jane Carter Hydrating shampoo check out these reviews here and here.
You should try pre-pooing as well. JoJo's go too product for dry hair is KimmayTube's Leave-In Condish! FABULOUS! Co-wash when you feel your hair needs a little moisture or needs a little cleaning and you dont want to use shampoo too often.
Find what works for you, keep a hair diary, track how your hair responds when ever you wash your hair, and what you use to wash it with. Your hair will tell you exactly what it needs!

Co Washing

I co washed for the first time last week. I have read about it a lot on numerous blogs and decided to try it, not giving it much hope, and I have to say, I don't think that I will be using shampoo for a while. I instantly fell in love with co washing. It was so easy to do! Washing my hair with shampoo and conditioner took me around 3-4 hours to do. yep that long! Now, when I co wash, it took me about 1 hour 50 mins. to do. I co washed with White Rain Freesia Spirit Conditioner, but before I did that, I moisturized my scalp with some warm olive oil and a few drops of lavender oil because my scalp was a little dry. I part my hair in four, and I Bantu Knotted the ends.

My scalp with the olive oil and lavender oil

I left it on there for about 30 mins, then I washed all I could with water (cold) first (I don't use hot water to wash my hair) I added the conditioner and washed gently.

My hair with the conditioner, can you see how much natural hair I have? Me neither...

I gently massaged my scalp, and let the conditioner run down my hair to clean it. I used to was my entire hair by bundling it on top of itself, but that just caused sooooo many knots and tangles.....
dark times....... dark times...... I rinsed that out and reapplied some more conditioner and I repeated the washing, but this time I lightly "crunched" the ends to help get the rest of the oil out. I left the conditioner in for about 40 mins and I rinsed it out.
My hair in sections, with the conditioner, see my natural hair now??

After I blow dried my hair, BIG mistake! It came out all puffy and trashy at the ends, a sign that I really need a trim! I tamed my hair with some carrot oil, coconut oil and my Bergamot oil mixed together.

I was NOT happy! see one side of my hair is longer than the other side?

It looks a bit nasty I know.

My now tamed hair

My hair looked and smelled great! and that mixture kept my hair moisturized! I think from now on I will be co washing very often!
