Hair Porosity

How porous is your hair?

I recently read an article about hair porosity and I found out that my hair is very porous. Which means that it absorbs a lot of moisture, which isn't bad, but not that good either. The more moisture my hair draws in when its wet, the drier it gets when it dries.  Normal hair can absorb  30% of its weight in water, extremely porous hair can absorb up to 40-50% of its weight in water. I have always seen  forum article on porous hair but they were so confusing ><. Go here and here and read this article I found on porous hair. You can do some simple porosity tests to determine how porous your hair is.

First test:
Wet your hair and notice how long it takes for your hair to soak up water and feel fully wet. If it takes a while to fully soak then your hair is less porous. When your hair is drying, notice how quickly it dries. If it dries quickly then your hair is porous so if it takes long to dry, then your hair is less porous. My natural hair dries in like 2 minuets after I wash it! POROUS!

Ok second test:

takes some of your freshly shredded hair from like a comb or brush , and place them in a bowl of water, if your hair strands sink quickly then your hair is porous. If some of the hair strands sink and other parts float, then you have a spotty porosity problem.

How to correct it:

Because extremely porous hair can loose moisture just as easily as it takes it in, there are measures you can take to help correct the problem. You can do protein treatments. Protein helps to fill in the gaps so doing them often (which I do once a week) can help your hair to retain moisture. But be careful! don't use too much  because protein isn't good for everyone. #trashy #dryhair

Also, rinses like apple cider vinegar (acv) rinses The acidic rinse will reduce porosity by constricting the cuticle scales, and it gives your hair shine ^^. Also, look out for shampoos and conditioners that are acidic, like for colour treated hair. These acidic shampoos and conditioners for colour treated hair, are meant to help retain the colour in your hair so they do not seep. It does not matter if you coloured or not, use them!

I hope this helps you guys who are confused about porosity, because it helped me!

  1. Wow. I never knew this. Thanks for the info. My hair takes 20 minutes to dry around the edges and maybe an hour for the middle. but when I do my morning routine, it takes several hours to fully dry.
